FINRA Fines EFG Capital $650,000 for Repeated Anti-Money Laundering Compliance Failures

In the realm of regulatory affairs, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority has fined Miami-based full-service brokerage firm EFG Capital International and issued a censure for persistent failures in its anti-money laundering, or AML, compliance program.

FINRA Rule 3310 requires member firms to develop and implement a written AML program reasonably designed to achieve compliance with the Bank Secrecy Act and its implementing regulations, specifically requiring the detection and reporting of suspicious transactions. A violation of this rule also constitutes a violation of FINRA Rule 2010, which requires firms to observe high standards of commercial honor and just and equitable principles of trade.

The $650,000 fine is the second major penalty for AML deficiencies the firm has faced in recent years. In May 2018, EFG was fined $800,000 for similar violations occurring between 2010 and 2015.

Iran MP Abolfazl Zohrevand sentenced 3 months and 1 day in prison for Remarks on Israel Conflict

Shifting our attention to Iran, Iran’s judiciary sentenced MP Abolfazl Zohrevand to prison on charges of “speaking against national security” during the 12-day war with Israel in June.

According to the Fars news agency, Zohrevand, a member of the Parliament’s National Security Commission, was sentenced to 3 months and 1 day in prison based on a complaint from the Supreme National Security Council. However, the verdict is open to appeal at the Court of Appeals.

The MP was found guilty of “spreading public anxiety” after making statements deemed contrary to national security during an online interview about the 12-day conflict in June, the Mizan website reported.

Zohrevand rejected the ruling, saying he will raise the issue in a public hearing before parliament.
