Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan Swears In Amjad Hussain as Chief Minister

Shifting our focus to Pakistan, the Pakistan Peoples Party’s Amjad Hussain was sworn in as the chief minister of Pakistan’s northern Gilgit-Baltistan region.

The Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) regional assembly on June 21 elected Hussain unopposed as no other candidate had submitted their nomination papers for the post of the GB chief minister.

Pakistan Peoples Party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari attended Hussain’s swearing-in ceremony in Gilgit, which was televised live.

“Governor Gilgit-Baltistan Syed Mehdi Shah will administer the oath,” the Radio Pakistan broadcaster reported.

President Marcos Appoints Dr. Jose S. Pujalte Jr. as Philippines Health Secretary

In South Korea, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has appointed Dr. Jose S. Pujalte Jr. as Secretary of the Department of Health (DOH) to further strengthen the country’s healthcare system, ensure the delivery of quality healthcare services, and promote better health outcomes for all Filipinos.

During a Palace press briefing, Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Undersecretary and Palace Press Officer Claire Castro said Pujalte is expected to bring to the DOH his more than three decades of experience as a physician, hospital administrator, educator, and public servant dedicated to advancing public healthcare.

Castro said Pujalte will replace outgoing Secretary Teodoro Herbosa, who tendered his resignation due to health reasons.

DNB Fines ABN AMRO €8.5 Million for AML Due Diligence Shortcomings

In the realm of regulatory affairs, ABN AMRO has taken note of the decision by De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) to impose an administrative fine of EUR 8.5 million in relation to structural shortcomings in the execution of due diligence for a part of its high-risk customers.

DNB identified structural shortcomings in a number of files investigated for the period from 20 September 2023 to 9 September 2024. Since the shortcomings were identified by DNB, ABN AMRO has taken further concrete remediation measures to strengthen the effectiveness of its AML processes.

ABN AMRO acknowledges the seriousness of the shortcomings identified by DNB and the factual findings in the files examined, and accepts DNB’s conclusions. The bank has accepted the administrative fine.

ABN AMRO regrets that, in the files examined by DNB, it did not meet the standards expected of the bank in safeguarding the integrity of the financial system. The bank recognizes the importance of its role as a gatekeeper and the trust that society places in it.

Georgian Opposition Politician Aleko Elisashvili Sentenced to 13 Years on Terrorism Conviction

Shifting our attention to Georgia, a Georgian opposition politician was sentenced to 13 years in prison after being convicted on ​a terrorism charge for attempting to set fire a court building in the capital last year, the Interpress news agency reported.

The court said Aleko Elisashvili, a founder of the Citizens ​party, broke into Tbilisi City Court’s chancellery building in ​November 2025 by smashing a window with a hammer, ⁠then poured gasoline inside and attempted to set the ​building alight.

Elisashvili, who pleaded not guilty and said he was ​protesting against a government crackdown on the opposition, was convicted of attempted terrorism.
