Luca Niculescu Sworn In as Romania’s Prime Minister, Ending Months-Long Political Deadlock
One noteworthy event has occurred in Romania, Luca Niculescu, an independent diplomat, has been sworn in as Romania’s new prime minister, forming a minority government after a prolonged political crisis. Niculescu secured parliamentary support with 280 votes in favor and 58 against, ending a political deadlock that had persisted since May. President Nicușor Dan appointed Niculescu on October 5, after three previous candidates failed to form a government.
Niculescu has reached an agreement with several parties for six months of support, while a long-term deal has yet to be achieved. He has pledged to focus on reducing the country’s large budget deficit and attracting new investments to Romania. In his speech to parliament, Niculescu thanked lawmakers for their trust and presented his governing program.
The political crisis in Romania began in May when former Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan was ousted by a no-confidence motion. His government had pursued strict austerity measures, leading to a high budget deficit and a technical recession. The situation worsened when previous prime ministerial candidates failed to form a government, increasing the likelihood of early elections.
