Data has seen quite a ride over the last 100 years. From being treasured like gold, traded like oil, serenaded to like a fair mistress and looked at with fearful eyes, it has become many things to many people. Having said that, most of us face a deluge of data on a daily basis and we treat it with little or no value. We give it away. To those taking a long term view, the data landscape is like the wild west of the 1800s. At the time, there seemed to be a lot of land for everyone (much of it barren and waste), but the motivated and resourceful were busy hoarding it. If you ever find yourself wondering why social media, messaging, cloud services, data storage, processing etc. is so cheap or even free – it is because the organizations behind them understand the laws of Data Gravity. To them, such initiatives help take advantage of the laws of nature & economics – If you build a large enough hoard of data, then those who need it, trade in it, want build on it or use it – will come to you and pay their respects.
